While in school, you can further explore pathways to the Skilled Trades by speaking with your guidance counselor. But before you set up a meeting, get familiar with these popular pathways that are offered in almost all School Boards in Ontario.

Technological Education courses will provide you with confidence and a focus strong foundation for a skilled trades career. Through learning hands-on about a variety of tools, techniques, and trades, you will discover more about your strengths, learn the value of perseverance, and turn ideas and concepts into reality.

OYAP.png

The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) is a specialized program in high school that allows you to explore apprenticeship and consider careers in the skilled trades, generally starting in Grade 11 or Grade 12 through the cooperative education program. Many of the Skilled Tradespeople featured in this website were successful "graduates" of their school's OYAP program.

SHSM.png

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program is a specialized program that allows you to earn credits toward your high school diploma while focusing your learning on a specific economic sector, including the Skilled Trades. Every School Board offers their own set sectors to explore, such as construction, hospitality, manufacturing, mining, transportation so be sure to ask your guidance counsellor for assistance.

Dual Credit programs allow you to take college or apprenticeship courses that count toward your high school diploma. You will benefit from the supervision and support of a college instructor and the dual credit teacher at your school. You will also have access to a variety of college supports and services.
